Etisalat and du have confirmed the ban on Skype in the UAE, and are providing possible resolution of this problem for the people. In Dubai, The festive season is in full flap and flutter. Likewise, expats have either gone back to their home to celebrate the holidays with their loved ones, or chosen to stay in the UAE. Expats who chosen to stay their, the free internet calling app “Skype” was used by them and many other prople, to connect with their friends and family. The telecom providers, Etisalat and du, confirmed that Skype is blocked throughout the country. Responding to the social media users over the Skpe ban, Etisalat said, “The access to the Skype App is blocked since it is providing unlicensed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Service, which falls under the classification of prohibited contents as per the United Arab Emirates’ Regulatory Framework.” Du replied to its customers’ interrogation, and said: “Please note that any unauthorized applications or services that are providing VoIP calling services are not supported in UAE.” The telecom providers, Etisalat and Du, have assured that there are alternate legal ways for residents to stay connected with their family and friends through internet services. Du and Etisalat have suggested, the Botim and C’Me Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) as part of their “unlimited” voice and video call services. However, they do meet with a monthly fee.
