Nicole Wadsworth, a commercial real estate developer from Huntsville, Alabama, initiated her campaign for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor in May 2025. Her platform emphasizes economic growth, workforce development, and conservative values. Recently, however, her campaign has encountered several significant challenges, including controversy regarding her academic credentials and the resignation of her entire campaign staff.
Her campaign initially gained attention for its bold demands, including a request from her campaign manager, Hunter Weathers, that media outlets refer to her as “Dr. Nicole Wadsworth” in all coverage, citing her academic and professional titles. This request, sent to various Alabama news organizations, raised eyebrows and set the stage for subsequent scrutiny.
In early June 2025, Wadsworth’s campaign faced a significant setback when questions arose about her claimed academic credentials. Her team initially stated that she held a PhD in economics from the University of Alabama, along with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama at Huntsville and a master’s degree from the Florida Institute of Technology’s Huntsville campus. Additionally, she was said to have certifications in zoning and planning from the University of North Alabama and economic development leadership from Auburn University.
However, on June 11, 2025, her campaign issued a clarification admitting that Wadsworth does not hold a PhD from the University of Alabama. Instead, she claims a Doctor of Theology (Th.D) in Faith and Public Policy from an unaccredited, Florida-based online seminary. This institution reportedly offers degrees that are not transferable, not accepted by other universities, and “not intended for employment purposes.” The revelation sparked widespread criticism, with some calling her claims fraudulent. Yellowhammer News reported that the seminary’s degrees are often honorary and available for purchase, further damaging her credibility.
The controversy intensified when it was revealed that Wadsworth had previously used the name Nicole Jones (from a prior marriage) and had not updated some of her professional profiles to reflect her current surname or recent activities. An online real estate profile from 2012 made no mention of her claimed theological degree or post-2018 career, adding to the confusion about her background.
Hunter Weathers, Wadsworth’s former campaign manager, stated that he had disseminated the incorrect information about her PhD based on details provided by Wadsworth herself. He later worked to “correct the record” by issuing a follow-up press release, expressing his commitment to ensuring the public received accurate information. Weathers noted, “The truth matters, and I owed it to the people of Alabama — and to myself — to make sure that truth was known.”
Yellowhammer News reported that Wadsworth’s campaign staff, including Weathers, resigned due to “persistent misinformation.” Weathers, a recent college graduate who worked for Governor Kay Ivey, announced his departure in a statement, mentioning he had left the campaign along with all other staff members. The resignation occurred shortly after Wadsworth’s campaign launch, indicating internal issues. Weathers’ statement highlighted the controversy over academic credentials as a significant factor, referring to his efforts to correct false information given to the media.
The departure of her campaign team places Wadsworth’s bid for Lieutenant Governor in a difficult position. The absence of staff to oversee operations, fundraising, and media relations significantly hampers her ability to compete effectively in the crowded Republican primary against candidates: Secretary of State Wes Allen, Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, Opelika pastor Dean Odle and former Army Major Pat Bishop.
The academic credentials scandal has dominated recent coverage of Wadsworth’s campaign, with posts on X reflecting strong public sentiment. Users on the platform described her as “a complete fraud” and criticized her for demanding the “Dr.” title while lacking a legitimate PhD.
